Description of Duties:
The Beef unit is a purebred/seedstock herd consisting of registered Hereford and Angus cows. There is also a small feedlot on site that is used to feed and finish cattle that will go the Chico State Meats Lab for processing. The candidate will work directly under the supervision of the General Manager, the student herdsman and will be expected to perform a variety of tasks independently.
Minimum Qualifications:
The ideal candidate needs to be punctual, accountable, and work independently as well as with a team. Must be willing to learn. The candidate must have a strong work ethic, attention to detail and safety, and understand that many tasks will occasionally be conducted in cold and hot environments. In addition, the candidate and understand that work will be required on weekends and sometimes holidays throughout the year. Basic knowledge of cattle handling and animal husbandry is required. Must be considered a full-time student at California State University, Chico.
*Preference will be given to applicants that have completed ANSC 199 and/or experience in the cattle industry*
Responsibilities:
- Distribute feed rations daily
- Identify sick cattle and treat properly
- Assist in vaccination programs
- Maintain and construct old and new fence
- Safely operate equipment used for feeding and maintenance
- Make decisions independently, communicate with team well
- Maintain records on all health treatments, pasture activity, etc.
- Maintain high standards in animal welfare
- Carry out night checks and processing new calves during calving season
- Assist in heat synch protocols, heat checking and A.I. during breeding season
- Attend weekly meeting to plan upcoming activities
- Assist in marketing of bulls for private treaty and consignment sales
- Must have the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Must be able to work in unfavorable weather conditions (heat, cold, etc.)

Additional Information:
All work must be performed within the State of California.
Compliance training completion (approx. 4 hours of work time) is required of this position within the first 30 days of work.
