Role Description:

 

The Chico State Basic Needs Project supports student success and wellbeing by providing supplemental food, emergency grants, housing resources, student parent support, referrals, and educational programming for students experiencing food insecurity, housing instability, or financial hardship.

 

The Basic Needs Outreach Intern increases awareness of and reduces stigma around Basic Needs services across campus and in the surrounding community. Under general supervision of the Basic Needs Outreach Coordinator, the Intern supports outreach activities and represents Basic Needs at pop-up pantries, classroom presentations, and campus and community events.

 

The successful candidate is reliable, organized, and professional, with strong communication skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality and respond empathetically in sensitive situations.

10 hours/week

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Support outreach efforts by assisting with engagement and communication with student organizations and campus partners.
• Represent Basic Needs at events, meetings, and presentations as directed.
• Staff and support pop-up pantries, tabling, classroom presentations, info sessions, and campus events.
• Provide basic program information and refer students to appropriate Basic Needs or campus resources.
• Assist with planning and implementation of food security, housing, and financial wellness programs.
• Support marketing efforts by creating flyers, posting on CatsConnect, drafting announcements, and assisting with promotional outreach as directed.
• Gather and organize outreach data for reporting purposes.
• Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
• Serve as back-up support for the Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Ability to maintain a confidential, non-judgmental environment.
  • Ability to empathize with students experiencing housing and/or food insecurity.
  • Ability to navigate emotionally sensitive conversations with professionalism.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Appropriate student service attitude.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Basic administrative and computer skills.
  • Regular, predictable attendance and communication.
  • Must participate in mandatory training: August 17, 2026- August 21, 2026.
  • Must participate in weekly staff meetings.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Customer service, volunteer, or nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • 2.5 GPA or higher.
  • All majors welcome.
  • Bilingual skills encouraged.
