Role Description:

The English Department in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts is collecting application materials for Teaching Associates (TAs) for ENGL 130W - Academic Writing.

Description of Duties:

Teaching Associates are responsible for providing classroom instruction, preparing course materials, assessing student performance and providing feedback, offering individual instruction during office hours, and determining course grades. In the English Department, Teaching Associateships are considered part of teacher training, so TAs are also required to attend weekly staff/training meetings and periodic program meetings. 

8 hours per week per 3-unit class

11.2 hours per week per 4-unit class

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Teaching Associates must:
    • Be enrolled in the CSU, Chico graduate English program.
    • Have successfully completed ENGL 634 Teaching Composition, or ENGL 689T for the specific discipline
  • Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of the subject matter of the discipline to which the individual is assigned. Ability to relate well to others within the academic environment and ability to instruct and evaluate students.
  • Experience: Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.
  • Education:
    • Acceptance as a graduate student at CSU, Chico.
    • For Teaching Associateships in Literature, Composition, and Creative Writing: classified status in English MA program.
    • For Teaching Associateships in EFLN: classified status in English MA program or Language Teaching MA program.
    • Successful completion of at least one semester of full-time enrollment as a graduate student with grades of B or better in all course work and no outstanding incompletes.
  • Additional Eligibility Requirements:
    • Teaching Associateships in Literature:
      • English major or equivalent coursework.
      • Satisfactory completion of English 689T in a literature course.
    • Teaching Associateships in Composition:
      • English major or equivalent coursework.
      • Satisfactory completion of English 634. (English 431 is highly recommended.)
      • Experience as a writing mentor or tutor is strongly preferred.
    • Teaching Associateships in Creative Writing:
      • English major or equivalent coursework.
      • Creative Writing minor or equivalent coursework.
      • Satisfactory completion of English 689T in English 220W.
    • Teaching Associateships in English/EFL:
      • TESOL certificate or equivalent coursework.
      • Experience as a tutor at ESL Support Services is strongly preferred.

Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.

  • Cover letter
  • Letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor (typically, your English 689T mentor or instructor for ENGL 634).
  • Detailed syllabus, including a complete course calendar/schedule, and a rationale (i.e, a brief explanation of the scope and focus of the course) for the course you wish to teach
  • For TAs in EFLN: a second letter from an observer of the applicant’s EFLN teaching or foreign language tutoring is also required.

All work must be performed within the State of California.

Compliance training completion (approximately 4 hours of work time) is required of this position within the first 30 days of work.
