Pay Range:  $17.86 – $23.84 per hour

Role Description:

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in the College of BSS is collecting application materials for an Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) Grading Assistant for the following Fall 2025 course: GEOG 105-01, “California Cultural Geography.”   

Description of Duties:

Under supervision of the GEOG faculty instructor (“Instructor”), the Geography and Environmental Studies ISA-Grading Assistant (“Grading Assistant”) will:

  1. Attend/view course lectures for the relevant class-section(s), e.g., GEOG 105, “California Cultural Landscapes” in Fall 2025;
  2. Read and evaluate student papers, returning assignments in a timely manner. For GEOG 105, student papers are typically two-page ungraded reflections; and
  3. Assist in maintaining and submitting student records, e.g., grades, for GEOG 105 or other course(s), as determined by the Instructor. 

The Grading Assistant must complete 4 hours of State of California employee compliance training during each semester of employment and perform work duties approximately 2 hours per week on average during the semester.  The work period is estimated to start in October 2025 and continue beyond finals week (December 31, 2025 is the end of the Fall 2025 semester). The Grading Assistant will work independently, professionally, and diligently to review course assignments and grading instructions/expectations, as guided by the Instructor. Arrangements will be made with the Instructor to access the assignments, utilizing the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies office in the BSS Building, Room 352, if needed.  Work will be performed online and specific workdays/times are flexible and at the discretion of the Grading Assistant in consultation with the Instructor. The current work cycle is for GEOG 105 in Fall 2025. There is potential for renewal in Spring 2026 to assist with another class, subject to Instructor’s need, Dept. Chair approval, and availability of funds. 

Duties Location:

Perform duties in coordination with Instructor’s class schedule, work needs, and availability for guidance. While work performed will be generally online, space and Wifi (Eduroam) will be available in the College of Behavioral & Social Sciences (BSS) Building, as needed, near the Dept. of GEOG (BSS 352) or other suitable location.  The Grading Assistant may use other campus spaces and/or department equipment (desktop computer, laptop, printer, etc.) during regular academic business hours, as needed, and .

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Prior completion of GEOG 105 with a grade of B or above.
  • Strong skills in academic reading comprehension, reviewing, and writing.
  • Task-driven ability to work both independently and cooperatively to meet deadlines.
  • Have access to a laptop or desktop computer that meets campus minimum requirements.
  • Degree in Geography and Environmental Studies or related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience in peer leadership, and student teaching or coaching is a plus.

The Grading Assistant must be able to make independent decisions. Graduate level or senior standing is preferred. Graduates in Geography and Environmental Studies or other relevant majors are strongly encouraged to apply. In addition, a successful Grading Assistant should be sensitive to the experience of students with disabilities and students from low-income, academically disadvantaged, and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Any student interaction, including reviewing student papers, involves assisting others who might have different backgrounds and written language communication abilities, and to serve their learning needs with respect, fairness, and courtesy.

Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.
