Position Title: BSS Mentors for Success Peer Coach

Role Description: Provide mentorship for the first time in college and transfer students.
Description of Duties:
The Mentor supports the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences advising team by providing personalized, peer guidance to help students navigate academic challenges, build study skills, and access resources. In addition, Peer Coaches will mentor 2 to 3 assigned mentees throughout the entire semester, fostering meaningful connections, offering consistent support, and encouraging academic and personal growth. Key functions include, but not limited to:
- Provide individual mentorship on study skills, time management, and personal goal setting to students.
- Refer students to campus resources (e.g., advising, counseling, tutoring) and help them understand academic requirements.
- Collaborate with BSS advisors to monitor student progress and identify those in need of additional support.
- Conduct outreach to engage students in mentoring sessions, workshops, and academic events.
- Maintain confidential records of mentoring sessions and document student progress.
- Develop resource materials and contribute to event planning for student engagement.
- Gather student feedback to improve mentoring services and participate in ongoing professional development.
- Adhere to FERPA guidelines to ensure student confidentiality and fulfill mandatory reporting responsibilities in accordance with Title IX regulations.
- Minimum hours per week: 10 hours
- Maximum hours per week: 20 hours
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be an enrolled student in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Chico State.
- Must enroll in a Fall 2025 SOSC 489 course related to mentorship experience.
- Experience with counseling techniques or academic coaching, such as motivational interviewing or peer counseling.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
- Office-based role with some remote flexibility; occasional evening or weekend hours during peak periods.
Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.
