Role Description:

The incumbent in this position will be responsible for laboratory instruction including the following: 

  • Instruct laboratory sessions,
  • Prepare lessons,
  • Attend course lectures,
  • Assist students during office hours and by appointment,
  • Meet weekly with faculty supervisor,
  • Assess student performance in laboratory participation and by grading assignments (including making and using grading rubrics),
  • Maintain records of attendance, participation, and assignment grades, and recognize when students show patterns of absences or low/missing grades and reach out to those students in a timely manner,
  • Correspond regularly with students, faculty supervisor, and other members of the ANTH 111 teaching team, and
  • Determine course grades.

TAs may also help faculty make assignments for students, prepare course materials and lessons for laboratory instruction, collect assessment information about the course, or present a lecture as a substitute or a guest lecturer.

Description of Duties:

~10-11 hours/week 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES FOR AN ANTH 111 TEACHING ASSOCIATE 

  • Instruct ONE lab section per week. For Fall 2025, we anticipate that each of the scheduled lab sections will be held in person (face-to-face) and run the scheduled 2 hours and 50 minutes.
  • Prepare to teach the lab section. This includes
    • Reviewing the learning outcomes (LOs), course content (readings, Canvas content, lectures), and any provided lesson materials or activities for the week. The organization of items in the lesson plans may be adjusted for the TA’s teaching preferences and personal style. With the supervisor’s approval, brief activities may be added or modified to help students meet the LOs, or to help the TA assess students’ ability to meet the LOs.
    • Practice explaining key concepts.
    • Prepare ways to encourage student participation, direct student conversations, and answer anticipated questions.
    • Help faculty develop activities and course materials for laboratory sessions.
  • Attend course lecture(s), participate in lecture activities, proctor lecture exams. It is anticipated that all lectures will be held in person (face-to-face) in Fall 2025. Lab instructors will also assist with taking and recording attendance.
  • Assist students during office hours. In Fall 2025, TAs will hold office hours by appointment - up to 1 office hour per week in person (though students and TAs may choose to use Zoom on a case-by-case basis). During office hours TAs may perform individual or small group tutoring. If students need further assistance, please direct them to the faculty supervisor, SI sessions, or the anthropology department tutor(s).
  • Meet with the faculty supervisor and other TAs or lab instructors. Meetings will be held once a week and last 45 - 60 minutes. There will also be a pre-semester meeting held the week before instruction begins that will last between 90 and 120 minutes.
  • Read and evaluate student assignments. TAs will grade module assignments and exams. This includes creation and/or use of grading rubrics. Tentatively, it is anticipated that TAs will grade one weekly Module Assignments and unit Lecture Exams (approx. once a month). TAs will also be asked to provide feedback on some lab assignments. TAs will be informed if these expectations change.
  • Maintain and submit student records. TAs will maintain records of lab and lecture attendance, participation, and assignment grades. Grades should be recorded in Canvas within one week’s time of attendance/submission. TAs will regularly check student records to recognize any concerning pattern of absences or low/declining grades. If that occurs, they will let their faculty supervisor know and reach out to that student(s).
  • Correspond regularly with students and their faculty supervisor. This includes responding promptly to emails from students and faculty. TAs should cc their faculty supervisor on all emails to students (except those that are confidential and fall under Title IX).
  • Proctor examinations. There will be exams in lecture; there may be some quizzes in the lab.
  • Write laboratory quizzes. Note: Quizzes will not be given each week, but there will be a few weeks when quizzes are used to assess students during the semester.
  • Keep a timesheet. Keep an exact time record of the amount of time you do for each of your TA duties. Notify the faculty supervisor immediately if you reach your maximum contract hours and still have work to complete for the week. Contract hours are FIRM - TAs cannot work beyond their allotted hours without overtime authorization.
  • TAs may be asked to do the following:
    • Proofread assignments or exams,
    • Collect assessment information about the course (e.g. help write or review student surveys),
    • Assist faculty with creating student assignments,
    • Assist faculty with creating student activities for lecture or lab,
    • Prepare course materials or lessons for laboratory instruction,
    • Present a lecture as a substitute or a guest lecturer on a topic of the TA’s choice, and/or
    • Grade extra credit assignments

Minimum Qualifications:

Anthropology graduate student with experience teaching biological anthropology in higher education. Demonstrated ability to instruct and assess students as well as relate well to others within the academic environment. Knowledge of the topics covered in biological anthropology as demonstrated by successful completion of multiple upper division biological anthropology courses. Satisfactory achievement in graduate level academic work, and is making sufficient progress towards their degree. Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate students who have successfully completed ANTH 610: Professionalism in Biological Anthropology is required. ANTH 610A with the teaching practicum affiliated with ANTH 111 is preferred.
