Role Description:
The Sociology Department in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is collecting application materials for a department tutor.
Description of Duties:
Tutor will provide individual tutoring. Tutor will promote independent learning and act as academic mentor and role model. Using questions and interactive strategies, tutor will guide students through course material and suggest helpful learning strategies. They will communicate and explain complex concepts and instructions clearly. Additionally, they will introduce and help students master learning and study strategies and skills, including note taking, test-taking, and time management.
Applicants should be sensitive to the experience of students with disabilities and students from low-income, academically disadvantaged, and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Tutor must be responsive to students and demonstrate professionalism in interacting with staff, faculty, and students. They possess the ability to work independently, and to take instruction from staff and chair. Successful applicants will demonstrate both maturity and patience.
Responsibilities
- Meet with students for 30-minute or 1-hour appointments via Zoom. Provide academic support to help students understand material and concepts, follow instructions, and model study skills and techniques.
- Monitor and manage appointment system. Respond to students in a timely manner.
- Accurately track and report appointments, time spent with students, and demand
- Work an average of 8-10 hours a week, recognizing that student demand is higher at certain points in the semester
- Must have availability in evenings and on weekends
- Use Zoom for appointments, including sharing screen, using the whiteboard, and sharing documents
- Must be able to provide basic support for any sociology class, but especially:
- SOCI 300 Classical Social Theory
- SOCI 301 Contemporary Social Theory
- SOCI 310 Social Research Methods
- SOCI 315 Statistical Analysis for the Social Sciences
Minimum Qualifications:
- Strong competence in SOCI 300, 301, 310, and 315 as demonstrated by class performance
- Wide breadth of experience as demonstrated by advanced progress through the major
- Personal qualities as described in this advertisement
- Enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Chico State for both Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters
- Students enrolled in both the on-campus and distance education Sociology programs are eligible
Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum GPA in the major of 3.7
- Completion of all lower-division General Education requirements
- Will continue to be enrolled after Spring 2027 semester
