Position Title: Small Group Subject Tutors for Fall 2026 Semester

Pay Range: $17.86 - $23.84 per hour

Location Type: On-Site (in-person & Zoom tutoring sessions).

Role Description:

The Student Learning Center is currently hiring for Subject Tutors for Fall 2026. The Subject Tutor supports academic success by facilitating small-group tutoring sessions in designated subject areas. This role focuses on helping students develop a deeper understanding of course material while fostering independent learning and effective study habits. Tutors serve as academic mentors and positive role models, creating a supportive learning environment that encourages engagement and confidence. The position requires active participation in ongoing training sessions and consistent weekly tutoring hours throughout the semester.

Description of Duties:

Under the direct supervision of the Student Learning Center Tutor Coordinator, tutors provide small group weekly tutoring sessions in assigned subject area(s). Tutors promote independent learning and act as academic mentors and role models. Using questions and interactive learning strategies, tutors guide students through course material and suggest helpful study skills. Successful applicants must be prepared to complete 10-15 hours of training during each semester of employment and provide approximately 6-10 hours of tutoring per week.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must be enrolled at CSU Chico and maintain good academic standing (2.8 GPA or above). Applicants must have the following knowledge and abilities: demonstrate excellent communication skills; work cooperatively with faculty, staff and other students; work with minimal supervision; be sensitive to the experience of students with disabilities and students from low-income, non-traditional, academically disadvantaged, and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Completion of specific courses with a grade 'B+' or better may be required in order to qualify. Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.

Preferences: Subjects needed: BIOL 103, 104; CHEM 107, 112, 270, 370, 451; CIVL 211, 311; FREN 101; JAPN 101-202; MATH 105, 107, 118, 119, 120, 121, 260; MECH 100L; PHIL 102; POLS 155; PSYC 364. Candidates with the ability to tutor more than one subject are preferred. Sophomore or Junior standing is preferred.

Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.
