Role Description:
Student Lab Assistants are responsible for maintaining a safe and productive environment in MMEM labs during open lab hours and extracurricular project times. This includes unlocking lab spaces, monitoring equipment usage, assisting with technical tasks, and enforcing safety policies. Lab Assistants serve as peer mentors, helping students build technical skills and troubleshoot design or fabrication issues. They also collaborate with faculty and staff to support and teach workshops, increase lab availability, and uphold operational policies.
This position involves regular interaction with a diverse student body and provides opportunities to lead small groups, practice teaching fellow students safe lab practices, and contribute to the continuous improvement of lab operations and student project support. The work schedule will be about 10 hours per week.
Description of Duties:
Safety Compliance
· Enforce lab safety rules and intervene when unsafe practices occur.
· Lead and support safety orientations for students and club members.
· Model and promote a culture of safety in all lab activities.
Technical Support and Equipment Guidance
· Provide hands-on teaching assistance with equipment setup, tool use, and machine operation, and fabrication techniques.
· Guide and instruct students through proper procedures for machining, composite work, plastics processing, and mechanical testing.
· Help students troubleshoot technical challenges and encourage best practices.
Lab Supervision & Scheduling
· Open and close lab spaces during assigned shifts.
· Monitor lab usage, ensure safe working conditions, and coordinate access across multiple clubs.
· Manage shared resource use and update lab calendars or schedules as needed.
Equipment Oversight and Maintenance
· Track equipment use and report malfunctions or maintenance needs.
· Maintain cleanliness and organization of tools, workstations, and raw materials.
· Communicate supply needs to faculty or staff.
Documentation & Communication
· Record attendance, incidents, and time spent supporting students and clubs.
· Communicate lab policies, equipment availability, and safety reminders.
· Serve as a point of contact between students, faculty, staff, and club officers.
Support for Special Projects and Competitions
· Assist with extended lab access and supervision during competition build periods.
· Offer technical and logistical support to ensure students can complete hands-on work safely and effectively.
· Teach fellow students how to safely and effectively design and build project components.
· Foster collaboration and shared learning across project teams and clubs.
· Complete compliance training within the first 30 days of work

· Completion of AMAR 160
· Completion of AMAR 260 desirable
